Julian Ansell – mixed media artist from Riverhead, NY and East End Arts member since 2014
Artist Statement:
If you ask, most people will agree that the number 7 “feels” green, I see my work as an attempt at that same sort of impossible description.
My artwork is a compulsion, or therapy, or a mania, depending on the day. The pieces themselves are without intent, but somehow still very personal to me. Generated almost by trance through automatic movements in order to capture a particular time or mood. Most of my work would be considered “automatic art” or “stream of consciousness” in that way.
With the major forms laid out in one shot as quickly as possible, built from a series of arcing, sweeping organic curves and lines. They are then finished (inked, dissected, and split into layers) assembled, and painted in the same automatic style. Without much forethought, planning or measurement. Remaining as true as possible to the original sketches.
They are composed of clear plastic, of varying thickness’ and layers, with cut paper and oil paints in between. On average, it takes about 20 hours to complete each work.
I have sought to create pieces that are original, and as unique to me as possible. Something new, strange, beautiful or disturbing, for its own sake.
Diana DeSantis – pastel artist from Whitestone, NY and East End Arts member since 2015
A painter of people, landscapes and still-life, Diana De Santis is listed in Who’s Who in American Art and has received over 200 awards and 15 Gold Medals. Diana is affiliated with Windsor Whip Art Works, the Behr-Thyssen galleries in New York and Portraits North in MA. Diana lives in Whitestone, NY with her husband.
Jonathan Pearlman – found objects sculptor from East Quogue, NY and East End Arts member since 2011
Artist Statement:
I hold up an object – a shoe – and I say to a friend, “Look a bird.”
And they say, “What bird?”
And I say, “Look again, a bird.”
And they say, “What bird?”
So I add a little of this and a little of that and they say, “Oh, that bird.”
And so it goes.
Pearlman, a resident of East Quogue, has worked in film and television and is the author of the novel Two to Tango.
Jacqlyn Rogers – painter from Greenport, NY and East End Arts members since 2010
Artist Statement:
85 years ago in first grade, I got my first box of Crayola crayons and fell in love with making art any way I could. I never stopped. I studied in College and beyond with the best I could find, especially Stuart Davis at the New School in NYC. Davis taught me to break from realism to something that would express feelings in a new way – Fragmenting. Collapsing. Integrating.
In Easton, PA, I was a founder of the Community Art League. I have exhibited widely, winning many awards over the decades. A woman before my time, I continued to study, paint, exhibit and sell artwork until 1969, when I became one of the first female entrepreneurs, and founded SmokEnders™, an international smoking cessation program having helped over 2,000,000 smokers around the world.
After retiring, I returned to my “art making”, and literally painted everything from furniture to rocks, switch plates and canvases. In the past 10 years, I have expanded my repertoire from painting with plant parts to creating constructions of found objects.
I now live in Greenport, NY.
