The ‘muse’ is the experience of inspiration that propels the creative process. Some artists think of ‘her’ as a ‘woman’. Sometimes she is an actual woman – as in Picasso’s various wives. But mostly it’s just the spirit that feels present when the artist creates effortlessly and that seems to be missing when they are creatively ‘stuck’.
