Gallery Talk: Finding Art in Generational Trauma

April 6 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Finding Art in Generational Trauma: A Conversation with artist & writer Anne Sherwood Pundyk and filmmaker Mary Hanlon

How does trauma impact family behavior from generation to generation? In turn, how can it give shape to creative expression? Anne traces the evolution of her artist’s book, “The Garden,” which is the focus of one gallery of “Beauty Out of Bounds.” The book presents a series of emotionally evocative abstract images with eleven stories centering on themes of abandonment and loss. She will be joined by filmmaker, Mary Hanlon, who will show an excerpt of her recent film, “The Mirrored Road.” Mary will discuss how film explores the relationship between trauma and memory and questions the function of home movies as a vehicle for truth.

Doors open at 12:30PM

EEA Main Gallery [133 E. Main St., Riverhead]

Space is limited. Please reserve ahead.

About Anne – An artist and writer, Anne Sherwood Pundyk brings together the traditions of abstract art, textiles and storytelling. Activated by color, her unstretched paintings are constructed from stained, cropped and sewn sections of drop cloth canvas. Elements of her studio work link directly to her photographs, artist’s books, writing and performance pieces. Based in New York, Pundyk has engaged in her art making, exhibiting and art writing over the last 35 years. She relocated her studio to the North Fork ten years ago. Curator Helen A. Harrison observed, “…[Pundyk’s] work suggests that understanding requires another interpretive tool, or perhaps a personal surrender to a deeper, less accessible, level of cognition.” The move has been the catalyst for a fundamental re-centering of her art around adapting everyday forms with an eye toward questioning convention. annesherwoodpundyk.com @anne.sherwood.pundyk

About Mary – Mary Hanlon is an award-winning filmmaker based in upstate New York. She earned her BA from The New School and an MFA from Hunter College. She has been a contributing writer for The Brooklyn Rail, and her films have been shown in New York and internationally. She was the recipient of a MacDowell Colony fellowship in 2014. maryhanlon.com @maryehanlon
