Working with elements of design that nature left behind, Jody collects seashells and marine-life fragments to create small sculptures, abstract assemblies and photographs, that was first presented at a solo exhibition titled, โCome Shell or High Waterโ for a gallery in NYC. โFinding beauty in that which is broken,โ her images and inventions celebrate the specimens she gathers – precious moments of design that survived a tumultuous journey. Her work relies on the physical labor of hand-collection, the patience of hand-manipulation and the meditative benefits of both. โThe process by which I search and sort and collect and create is as important as the work that results.โ
Jody studied art and psychology at Harvard College and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, before a decades-long career in advertising andย motion picture marketing. She also credits a long list of gifted art teachers andย inspiring camp counselors, โwho cultivated my passion for the arts and the act of โmaking,โ which continues to influence my art to this day.โ
Now, deeply immersed in the East End art community, sheโs presented aย PechaKucha at the Parrish Art Museum and conducted Artist Talks for both the Pollock-Krasner House and South Fork Sea Farmers TV, among others. Her work appears regularly in group and juried exhibitions with East End Arts, Southampton Artists, the Water Mill Museum, Guild Hall and East End Photographers Group, and is a featured artist at the Shelter Island Historical Society Havens Store. Images and stories about her work have appeared in Southampton and Sag Harbor newspapers, and her photographs and sculptures are in private collections from one end of the country to the other. In one form or another, all of Jodyโs creations are dedicated to the memory of her daughter, Julia, and the possibility of moving forward with pieces left behind.
