The East End Arts Teeny Awards has celebrated excellence in theater in East End Long Island area high schools. We believe in unleashing the creativity of teens who perform on stage and those who work behind the scenes to make the magic happen. We build a community of advocates for the performing arts in high school just as athletic boosters provide support for sports.
Each year, East End Arts inspires area high school students to participate in a unique community project honoring civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr.
Since 2020. the MLK Portrait Project unites the local youth community through artistic collaboration in celebration of Black History Month. Participating Long Island High Schools independently create large-scale mosaic portraits of civil rights leaders, each multimedia piece consisting of 16 individual panels and measuring 48” x 48”. The project braids education of American History and art, and its gallery exhibition brings students from many districts together.
The Music Masters Intensive is an annual program designed to accelerate students’ musical development through concentrated learning. Over the course of five rehearsal sessions, selected students work with an expert musician to hone skills in performance, composition, and music theory. The program focuses yearly on a new musical genre each year, giving students the opportunity to explore a wide range of styles—from jazz to classical to contemporary. This intensive format prepares students for future opportunities, such as college auditions, scholarships, or professional performances. The final concert gives the group a public performance opportunity that can not only be enjoyed by the community but also be filmed for auditions and social use.
The East End Arts School is proud to collaborate with The Perlman Music Program for this opportunity to bring local school-aged string students together with an outstanding orchestra of international student musicians, under the baton of world-famous, internationally acclaimed violin virtuoso and conductor Itzhak Perlman. This program commenced in 2012.
The memory of Linda Rie Cohen, a North Fork resident and champion of the arts and sciences, is honored through an endowment established by her husband that annually recognizes the merits of a local young ‘Rising Stars’ with a $10,000 unrestricted award.
Now officially in its third year, the ‘Linda Rie Cohen Rising Star Award’ provides an unrestricted award of $10,000 to a single local 16–20-year-old. “I want this award to make a difference in their future direction,” states Linda’s widower and the endowment’s founder. Selection is by committee and is subjective, not based on financial need but instead on the potential positive impact of the young talent.
