The Talking Drum

Gun . . . Dun Gun. Gun. Dun Gun. Pa Ta. Ta Pa. Go Do.… No, this is not an attempt to join the ranks of Tolkein by creating a new language. It is, however, the very unique language of a West African drum, the djembe. If you haven’t stopped by the EEAC Community School of the Arts and witnessed this new Talking Drum class, well, let’s just something might be amiss in your life. The class is under the direction of master drummer Dan Bailey, who was taught and mentored by his godfather and Musical Ambassador of Nigeria, Babatunde Olatunji. His traditional approach brings a depth of authenticity rarely experienced this side of the Atlantic. The students, raging in age from 11 years to those who don’t tell, have learned how to use their hands to generate a range of tones from the single skin of the djembe. Students are also guided in learning traditional rhythms, rhythmic patterns and authentic chants. The program will continue in the spring with an introduction to a variety of culturally based drumming styles.

The Talking Drum was by created by the EEAC as an outreach with the dual goal of bringing cultural arts to the communities of the east end and reaching youth and adults who may be underserved in the area of the arts.
